NGO�s bid for transformation of Dhubri district

GAURIPUR, April 21 - Under the campaign to transform Dhubri district into a model centre of excellence, a non-governmental organization NECARDO has succeeded in establishing a laudable track in community intervention for its continuous activism in the last 25 years in lower Assam.

Terracotta and pottery at Asharikandi village was the beginning. Then the NGO developed two villages � Bhogdanga and Faksharkuti � which lie outside the international barbed wire fencing. Its other activities include declaration of tourist circuit in lower Assam and creation of amenities for tourists, trade route and trade promotion intervention, Sonahat International Trade centre, health care and health education, a medical college and hospital and so on.

The organization is now advocating for a university in Dhubri and setting up of border haat for promotion of border trade and Guwahati-Dhaka bus services via Sonahat trade centre and a vocational course on terracotta and pottery in schools and colleges.

The North East Craft and Rural Development Organisation (NECARDO) informed the Governor of Assam, Prof Jagdish Mukhi of its programmes and sought his cooperation and guidance in the furhtherance of their cause. It invited him to visit the district. The Governor�s office has informed B Bhattacharjee, Director, NECARDO that the visit will take place soon.

It is worth mentioning that the organization bagged the Chief Minister�s best community action award 2007 for its contributions to the society. It is also bidding to transform Dhubri district into a model centre of excellence in the near future.
