NGO to support poor, meritorious students

GUWAHATI, Aug 11 - A new voluntary organisation has been formed with an aim to extend support to needy but talented students of the State in pursuing their higher studies.

The new organisation, christened Shikshasarothi, has identified four basic sectors in which students will be provided support.

In a statement here, the voluntary organisation stated that it would set up a book bank to support the poor and underprivileged meritorious students. Besides, it will extend financial grant, scholarship etc., to such students and set up counselling or facilitation centres.

The organisation is, however, yet to formulate the modalities for its long-term goals. To start with, it has decided to set up a book bank, which will also facilitate reuse of old books by school and college students. It will also extend financial support in the form of tuition fees, educational grants etc., to needy and meritorious students.

The organisation has extended support to eleven students so far. These students belong to Class-X, Class-XI and Class -XII. It has distributed books among the students and is also providing Rs 1,000 to each student every month.

Shikshasarothi recently held a public meeting at Gauri Sadan here with its president Prof MC Kalita of Gauhati University in the chair. It was addressed, among others, by Prof Basanta Deka, a former teacher of the city�s Handique Girls� College, Prof Abani Bhagawati of GU and Rina Bora, Head Mistress, Tinsukia Sessamukh ME School.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof Basanta Deka offered to extend an assistance of Rs 500 per month to each of the Sikshasarothi-supported students if they take up physics as a major subject in the degree level. His proposal was accepted with applause by the organisation members.

Addressing the meeting, Prof Abani Kumar Bhagawati emphasised value-based education. Rina Bora also requested the Sikshasarothi-supported students to prepare themselves to eventually contribute towards society. Sikshasarothi general secretary Nripen Sarma also spoke on the occasion.
