NGO to step up vigil at railway station

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 14 With incidents of child trafficking on the rise in the North East, the members ofEKTA, an organisation of non-government organisations including SOS Childrens Village and Snehalaya has chalked out a plan for concerted prevention of trafficking in the region.

It needs to be mentioned here that EKTA had met soon after the Kanya Kumari incident and had decided to concentrate all its efforts to put an end to trafficking.

Very soon an anti-trafficking voluntary force will be placedat Guwahati Railway Station through which according to EKTA most of the trafficking takes place.

The strategy is to keep a vigil on all the trains leaving Guwahati at various times of the day and night for the coming six months. Children travelling out of Guwahati,in small groups or in large groups will be monitored and doubtful cases will be reported to the police at the Railway Station, informed Father Lukose, director of Snehalaya. Father Lukose said that the issue being very delicate, EKTA has decided that the anti-trafficking voluntary force will be given a uniform and an identity card. They will be operating with the cooperation of the Railway authorities as well as the police, said Father Lukose.

The anti-trafficking voluntary force will be given an orientation on how to identify traffickers by Dr R Sarma ofGOLD, an organisation specialised in rescuing the victims of trafficking.

It would also be taken care of that groups of children going for excursions, national competitions or studies outside the State are not harassed.

EKTA has also decided to carry out an extensive awareness campaign to reach out to a greater number of children. This year, the members of the organisation will jointly celebrate Child Rights Day to create awareness in the society for a rights-based approach to child care and strengthen the movement to protect the child.
