TURA, March 10 - The United Garo Autonomous Council Movement Committee (UGACMC) which has been seeking a separate autonomous council for the Garo population in Assam held a two-day training on the population and socio-economic survey on the Garo tribe of Assam in Bakrapur village under Goalpara.

The training is the first phase of looking at census data for implementation of a Council for Garos in the State and involved Gaonbura/village secretary and youths of Goalpara district.

There is no census on the population of Garos in Assam at present. The last census (2001) puts the figure at 1.37 lakh. The survey, which will take about three months, will also examine and analyse the socio-economic and educational status, said chairman of UGACMC, Alex K Sangma.
