By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 1 - The Assam Gandhi Smarak Nidhi, a non-governmental organisation based at Sonapur, has chalked out plans to launch a health project and to work for cultural integration of all sections of people living in that area.

The organisation is currently running two hostels for students belonging to weaker sections of society mainly with donations received from the people of the area. The students can stay in the hostels at a very nominal cost. An eri silk project run by the organisation has provided employment opportunities to the womenfolk of the area.

However, the horticulture project of the organisation is facing severe problems due to the menace created by monkeys as most of the fruits of the gardens are regularly damaged by the apes. The Nidhi has requested the forest department to take steps to deal with the problem. But unfortunately no action has been taken by the department so far.

The organisation has also been propagating the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi among the youths of the area and is planning to set up a library for the benefit of the students.

The next aim of the organisation is to launch a health project for the benefit of the poor people of the area with stress on naturopathy and has sought help from the government in this regard. The Nidhi has also requested the Khadi Board to open a centre in the area for the benefit of the backward classes of people of Sonapur area.
