NGO members remanded to 12 days custody

SHILLONG, May 31 � Three out of the seven arrested for �instigating a crowd� during a rally here on Friday, were remanded to 12 days judicial custody by a local Court here yesterday.

East Khasi Hills SP, M Kharkrang said while four of the arrested were admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital, three others were produced in Court and subsequently remanded to 12 days judicial custody on Saturday.

He said that the seven were arrested for instigating a crowd to violate section 144 CrPC during a rally called by the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) near Shillong Civil Hospital on Friday.

The arrested have been identified as Banisha Nongsiej, Barisha L Mawphlang, Caroline Nongrum, Banisha L Nongrang, Ialam Shympliang, Aisuk Dirborn and Kerdalin Biam.

Kharkrang further said that during the rally �male HYC volunteers used the female volunteers in front to act as their shield� and therefore a number of women were injured during the police lathicharge.

He further said HYC called for a shutdown of colleges and schools so that the children could be taken to the rally. �Their aim was to put the school children in front so that police will not be able to react and enable them to break the prohibitory order,� Kharkrang added.

Meanwhile, former Chief Executive Member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Adelbert Nongrum, who is on an indefinite fast, near Shillong Civil hospital was admitted to the Hospital yesterday after his health condition deteriorated.
