DOOMDOOMA, July 5 - A delegation of Tinsukia-Dibrugarh District Flood and Erosion Resistance Struggle Forum (TDDF and ERSF) led by its president Binod Kedia and secretary Prakash Rai visited the erosion-affected areas of Bogoribari, Malbhog, Sisini, Bhajani, Hatighuli, Dirak-Sumoni, Kordoiguri etc., in Tinsukia district on Thursday and took stock of the prevailing situation in the backdrop of flood-induced devastations all over the state.
The delegation expressed satisfaction over the current work of laying geo bags being implemented by the state Water Resource Department at Hatighuli in order to check river bank erosion.
In a press statement issued by Santanu Goswami, media adviser of TDDF and ERSF, the organisation stated that the dyke would become even safer if the work of geo bag laying is extended upto 500 metres downstream from the point where the work of geo bag laying has progressed. Otherwise, this particular portion would be eroded by the river soon, thus posing a great threat to over 60 villages in the area.
On the other hand at Bogoribari, several villages, including Bogoribari, Malbhog, Upor Laupani and Laupani etc., have been badly affected by flood waters of the Noa-Dihing.
Flood waters inundated these villages after entering through the last end of Noa- Dihing dyke at Bogoribari. The NGO therefore urged the government to extend the length of the dyke by another five kms and join it with the Dirakmukh dyke in order to save over 20 villages of the area from the annual ravages of floods.
Around 20 families of Malbhog village have been leading a miserable life as large areas of the village are still under water. The flood waters entered the village through this portion of the dyke.
At Sisini and Bhajani areas, the Water Resource Department has tried to tame the turbulence of the Brahmaputra with bamboo barricades. But as the condition of the old bamboo barricades are already in a dilapidated condition, the NGO urged the government to repair the present structure on mission mode in order to check river bank erosion.
To protect the historic Sri Sri Mayamara Tipuk-Simaluguri Bajrapur Satra at Kordoiguri, the work of laying pre-fabricated cement blocks has been limited to areas near the Satra only.
The NGO therefore demanded the government to lay pre-fabricated cement blocks from Goriyating area if the Satra was to be saved from erosion, stated a press release.
