GUWAHATI, Aug 27 � The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has assured the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) early completion of the construction of the broad-gauge (BG) railway line from Kamakhya Railway Station and Pandu Inland Port. The NFR made the above assurance at a meeting held by it with the representatives of the IWAI on Wednesday, said a press release here.
This line is being constructed by the NFR as a deposit works on behalf of the IWAI, to facilitate transportation of cargo or goods by railway from the Pandu Inland Port. The Port is to receive ship-load of consignments from Haldia Port via Bangladesh and cargo or goods from other areas to be sent to destinations like Bangladesh etc. the railway is hence of much importance for the Pandu Port to boost its performance.
The Pandu Port is being modernised by the IWAI with construction of two jetties � one for low level operation during the lean season and the other for high level operation during the monsoon season.
The NFR made the above assurance to the IWAI at the meeting attended by NFR general manager Keshav Chandra and IWAI chairperson B Prasad.
While Keshav Chandra was assisted by other principal heads of the departments of the NFR, IWAI chairperson was assisted by the senior officers of the Authority�s Guwahati office.
The IWAI chairperson also elaborated other projects planned to be undertaken in the NE region for enhancing its connectivity through waterways, said the press release.
