NF Rly Official Held On Bribery Charges

GUWAHATI, Jan 17: The CBI today arrested Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), Construction-II, of Northeast Frontier Railway Mahendra Singh Chauhan on charges of accepting Rs 1 crore as bribe from a private company in lieu of extending favour for granting contracts.

A CBI press release said that one of the directors of the private company, M/s ABCI Infrastructures Pvt Ltd, allegedly got the money delivered to a relative of the CAO at his residence in Dehradun.

Apart from Chauhan, Deputy Chief Engineer Hem Borah, Assistant Executive Engineer Laxmi Kant Verma, director of ABCI Infrastructures Pawan Baid, an employee of ABCI Infrastructures, Bhupendra Rawat, and one Indra Singh have been named as other accused in this case.

Searches were conducted today at 21 locations, including in Delhi, Uttarakhand, Assam, Tripura and West Bengal, which led to recovery of Rs 54 lakh in cash. An alleged bribe amount of Rs 60 lakh, which was allegedly paid to Chauhan earlier, has also been recovered.

“It was alleged that the accused were abusing their official position for obtaining illegal gratification,” the CBI said, adding further investigation is on.

The case has been registered under relevant sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
