Illegal timber seized

RAHA , Jan 25: The Forest Protection Force, Nagaon, and Dharamtul forest range officials, in a joint operation seized illegal timbers at Kakatigaon near Raha on Sunday night. Following a tip-off, the team of forest personnel launched the operation and seized the timbers worth around Rs 50,000 as well as a vehicle meant for carrying the timber. No one has been arrested in this connection. – ANN Service

One dies of Covid-19

BISWANATH CHARIALI, Jan 25: Prominent businessman of Biswanath Chariali Swapan Dutta died of Covid-19 while undergoing treatment at Tezpur Medical College yesterday. It is learnt that Dutta, a resident of Shantipur at Biswanath Chariali, had gone to Nepal for an eye treatment and returned home last Wednesday. From that day onwards, Dutta had difficulty in breathing. Later, he was admitted to the Biswanath Chariali Civil Hospital where he tested positive for Covid and was immediately rushed to Tezpur. He is survived by his wife, a son, a daughter and a host of relatives. – Correspondent

Anti-CAA protest

Mangaldai, Jan 25: Activists of the All Darrang Students’ Union observed Sunday as a ‘black day’ for Assam while protesting against the visit of Home Minister Amit Shah. The AASU unit, in association with the Deomornoi Anchalik unit, staged protest demonstrations near Deomornoi College by hoisting a black flag and burning a copy of the CAA. AASU leaders including central executive member Niranjan Saikia, president of Darrang AASU Sailendra Kumar, vice president Nayanjyoti Deka and general secretary Bitopan Deka took part in the protest. – Correspondent

Science awareness event

RANGIYA, Jan 25: Under the aegis of the Rangiya unit of the Assam Science Society, a science awareness programme was held a couple of days ago at the Arimatta Vidyapith HSS of the locality. A popular talk on the focal theme ‘Learning science through literature’ was held and the participating students were apprised of the theme by resource person Nurul Amin. Science teachers and office-bearers of the Society’s Rangiya unit, Nayanjyoti Das and Diganta Deka, and teacher Ratish Ch Das also spoke on the occasion. – Correspondent

BSF civic action programme

Dhubri, Jan 25: The 67th battalion of the BSF recently conducted a civic action programme at Pattamari Primary School for the villagers in the area under the supervision of JC Nayak, DIG, SHQ, BSF, Dhubri, and Atul Kumar Shahi, Commandant of the 67th battalion. During the programme, 15 desks and benches were given to the primary school, 25 sewing machines to the Pattamari SHG, an LED TV to the Pattamari community centre and 38 spray pumps were distributed amongst the farmers of the area. – Correspondent

Quiz competition

BARPETA, Jan 25: A quiz competition on election-related matters was organised by the Barpeta district administration recently with a view to creating awareness among the people. Held in the District Library auditorium, it was inaugurated by ADC Rajib Das and conducted by Dr Birinchi Kumar Das, Principal of BHB College, under the supervision of Dal Pathak, professor of Madhab Choudhury College, Barpeta. The District Institution Education and Training, Howli, bagged the first prize in the college-level competition, while Madhya Kamrup College, Chenga, and Barnagar College, Sarbhog, won the second and the third prizes respectively. Bhella HS School, St Teresa School and Sakirbhitha High School won the top three prizes respectively in the school-level quiz. – Correspondent

New committee formed

JAMUGURIHAT, Jan 25: The Balipara regional committee of Sahitya Sanmilani, under its Sonitpur district committee, was formed in a meeting held at Balipara MV School yesterday with Rajesh Dutta in the chair. The new committee comprises 15 members. Minku Kalita, state secretary of Sahitya Sanmilani, graced the meeting as an observer, stated a press release. – Correspondent

‘Sahitya Sabyasachi’ title conferred

SIVASAGAR, Jan 25: Former president of Sodou Asom Kabi Sanmilan and prolific writer Prema Gogoi was conferred ‘Sahitya Sabyasachi’ title by Sivasagar Zila Lekhika Samaj in a meeting held on Saturday at Sivasagar Girls’ College. The meeting, presided over by Diptimoyee Buragohain, was addressed by litterateur Nahendra Padun, Haren Ch Nath, Jogamaya Gogoi, Dr Nirupoma Mahanta, Juga Gogoi, Budhin Mishra, Dr Saumarjyoti Mahanta, Dr Anil Kr Saikia, Dr Dilip Kr Buragohain and others. Prema Gogoi, a literary pensioner, has published 38 books on a variety of subjects though poetry is his preferred field. A 376-page felicitation volume, Sahitya Sabyasachi, was released by Dr Jyotiprasad Saikia. Gogoi was felicitated with mementoes and bouquets by different organizations including the Sivasagar Zila Sahitya Sabha, Zila Kabi Sanmilan, Nazira Kabi Sanmilan, Rudrasagar Sahitya Sabha and Rongpur Sahitya Sabha. Gogoi in his speech said that no writer writes for gaining accolades and awards. Writing, he said, is his passion, or rather obsession, and he would remain indebted to the people’s for their love and inspiration. – Correspondent

Karmachari Parishad annual meet

GAURIPUR, Jan 25: The 26th annual conference of Gauripur Anchalik Karmachari Parishad was held on Saturday in the Sankardev ME School premises with a daylong programme. Safiur Zaman Molla, vice president of the Parishad, hoisted the flag of the Parishad and smriti tarpan was offered by adviser AM Khan. A sapling plantation was led by N Hussain around the school campus. The delegates’ meet was inaugurated by Chandana Das, Headmistress of the school. The open meeting inaugurated by Jalal Uddin Ahmed was chaired by Amzad Hussain Mazumder. The objectives of the meet were explained by Gunu Chandra Mali. The open session was addressed by Debajyoti Chakraborty, Ahid Khan Parish, Amzad Hussain Mazumder, Ranjit Ghosh, Sohrab Ali Skh. Several resolutions were adopted in the meeting. – Correspondent

Teacher’s demise condoled

BISWANATH CHARIALI, Jan 25: The Asam Madhyamik Sikshak Aru Karmachari Santha and its Biswanath district unit expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Rabin Saikia, former general secretary of the Santha and a teacher of Dhunaguri High School, Lakhimpur district. A team of the teachers’ body led by Govinda Kalita, state secretary Pradip Sharma, Prashanta Mahanta and others visited Saikia’s home on Saturday and offered condolences to the bereaved family. It may be mentioned here that late Saikia had played a pivotal role in raising the problems of the secondary teachers of the State during his tenure. – Correspondent

Awareness meet on child marriage

BARPETA, Jan 25: An awareness meet on the dangers of child marriage, adolescent motherhood, and the role of the new generation and the religious leaders to check the menace was organised at the Nagaon block PHC in Barpeta district a couple of days back. Dr Sunit Kumar Bakali spoke on the dangers of adolescent motherhood. The police officials present at the meet described the role of police as well as public in checking such practices. Block development officer of Piramal Foundation Satyam Sharma and district media expert of the National Health Mission, Barpeta, Amirul Haque, also addressed the meeting. – Correspondent
