Newly-constructed Gandhi Udyan in city inaugurated

GUWAHATI, Oct 2 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today inaugurated the newly-constructed Gandhi Udyan built under the Guwahati Smart City Project at a cost of Rs 3 crore at the Gandhi Mandap in the city.

Speaking at the inaugural function, the Chief Minister said that people from all sections of society must join hands to maintain peace, harmony, brotherhood and unity so that Mahatma Gandhi�s dream of an ideal state or a �Ram Rajya� could be realised.

Stating that Guwahati�s green cover had been adversely affected by rampant cutting of hills, Sonowal said people must work towards protecting the forest cover and Guwahati city must be made an example in cleanliness and greenery so that people from all corners of the State could emulate it.

He said that Gandhi had visited the Gandhi Mandap on his fourth tour of Assam and to realise his vision of a clean India all must strive to keep Guwahati clean and garbage-free. He also directed the Guwahati Development Department to take more steps to beautify the Gandhi Mandap.

Later, the Chief Minister attended the 150th birth anniversary celebration programme of Mahatma Gandhi organised by the Khadi and Village Industries Board at its Chandmari office. He laid the foundation stone of a multipurpose complex of the board on the occasion.

Speaking at the open session of the programme, Sonowal highlighted the initiatives taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to build a strong mass opinion against single-use plastic and he called upon the people to make the initiative a great success by avoiding usage of plastic items.

Saying that the Khadi Board had depicted a robust picture of its potential by doing business worth Rs 1 crore, Sonowal urged the board to focus on producing more khadi products and making the people aware about using khadi more instead of plastic.

The Chief Minister also attended the pledge-taking programme of Fit India and Swachhta organised by the Sports and Youth Welfare Department, Assam and the State Level Advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare at the Sarusajai sports complex.

He urged the young generation to take a leading role to create mass awareness against plastic use while calling on the citizens to make Prime Minister�s Fit India Movement a great success to live a fit and disease-free life.
