GUWAHATI, Oct 22 - Aimed at easing traffic congestion in the Ganeshguri area of the city, the State government today opened the newly-constructed extension of the Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha flyover, which connects the flyover with the RG Baruah Road. The new extension has a length of 425.50 metres comprising a two-lane road. Another one-lane extension with 27 metres of length also connects the new extension with the older flyover.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the newly-built flyover this morning, which has been constructed by the PWD (Roads) under the State Owned Priority Development Fund for the year 2018-19 with financial outlay of Rs 58.74 crore. Sonowal had laid the foundation for the flyover on March 6, 2019, with a target completion period of 30 months and its work started from the month of August of that year. However, the bridge was completed within 19 months. The flyover extension has been termed as a Durga Puja gift to the people by the State government which got completed within just 19 months despite the hindrance caused by the ongoing pandemic.

Meanwhile, in the Ganeshguri-Dispur area, city-dwellers will have to wait till the completion of the flyover being constructed at Super Market area, an official of the PWD (Roads) said.

In his inaugural speech, Sonowal congratulated the PWD (Roads) for setting a record in terms of completion of the flyover and termed it an example of good governance in the State.

Terming Guwahati as the soul of the State, Sonowal observed that various innovative steps and rapid infrastructure development in the city have acted as a launch pad for Assam to march forward in the global arena. Guwahati is fast emerging as the nerve-centre of South East Asian countries, he said.

PWD Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma in his speech said that altogether 16 flyovers are currently being constructed in different parts of the State, including the flyovers at Super Market and Maligaon in the city.

He informed that a new flyover connecting Rehabari with Arya Vidyapeeth College has also been proposed. A few other infrastructure projects such as an express corridor from Rehabari to Panbazar and an elevated flyover from Chandmari to Noonmati are also mooted by the government, he added.

Dr Sarma also informed that while around 30 per cent work for Guwahati-North Guwahati Bridge has been completed, nine footbridges that are being constructed in critical areas of the city with elevators would be dedicated to the people within December-February.
