New Year celebrations incident-free: police

GUWAHATI, Jan 1 - Altogether three �brought dead� cases were reported in the emergency ward of the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on the night of December 31, hospital Superintendent Ramen Talukdar told The Assam Tribune.

Talukdar also stated that apart from the �brought dead� cases, altogether 17 accident cases were reported at the GMCH during the night.

At the Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH), altogether 13 accident cases were reported throughout the night. Four of those were brought in critical condition. However, no death was reported. Sources at the MMCH told The Assam Tribune that this time emergency cases throughout the night were lesser in comparison to last year.

On the other hand, Guwahati Traffic Police detected altogether 413 cases of drunken driving during the night of December 31 and wee hours of January 1, revealed a statement issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Amanjeet Kaur here today.

�In order to ensure safe New Year celebration for all citizens and to prevent rash and drunken driving in the city on 31st night, Guwahati Traffic Police was conducting drives for the last fifteen days, where around 800 cases of drunken driving were detected. Last night, we detected altogether 413 cases of drunken driving by all kinds of drivers and we took action against all the violators as per law. We also found that many citizens used sobre drivers to prevent any untoward incident, which reflects citizens� awareness and intent to make the celebrations safe and we are happy that our awareness campaigns for many days brought positive results. The New Year arrival was incident-free in Guwahati,� Kaur said in the statement.

Among the 413 drunken driving cases, 176 were reported in Dispur division, 96 cases were reported in Chandmari division, 69 cases in Panbazar division and 72 cases were reported in Jalukbari division during the drive that police carried out from 8.30 pm to 4 am.

On the other hand, every park, temple and amusement establishment of the city witnessed huge crowds today, the first day of the year. The Kamakhya temple too recorded an estimated 50,000 devotees, who queued up right from early morning to seek the blessings of Goddess Kamakhya.

Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi, Central Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and some members of the Assam legislative Assembly were among those who visited Kamakhya.

Over 14,000 people visited the Assam State Zoo cum Botanical Garden today, according to DFO Tejas Mariswamy. The zoo authorities collected Rs 3,72,710 as revenue from sale of tickets.
