New varieties of algae found

By Correspondent

NAGAON, March 2 - A huge number of endangered varieties of red algae is available in Assam in particular and the north-eastern region in general, and to identify them, a planned research is necessary. This was observed by Prof John West of Melbourne University while delivering a talk at the Nowgong College on February 24.

In his lecture, Prof West observed that many varieties of red algae are available in river and sea water and also in the soil. A proper scientific study on the algae will contribute immensely to the field of environment and medicine, Prof West added.

Prof West was accompanied by former professor of the Institute of Oceanography, Venezuela, EK Ganesan and Prof Orland Nesi of Shan Paul University, Brazil. All the visiting scientists were welcomed by Principal Dr Sarat Borkotoki.
