New Tripura Guv to be sworn in on May 20

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, May 17 Tathagata Roy, a seasoned politician would take oath as the new Governor of Tripura at Raj Bhavan here on May 20.

Roy, a strong supporter of RSS ideology, would be arriving here on May 19 and assume office of the Governor the following day.

As per convention, Chief Justice of High Court of Tripura Deepak Gupta is supposed to administer the oath of office and secrecy to the new Governor. Since, he is out of the State, a request has been forwarded to him to join the swearing in ceremony of the new Governor.

Roy will be the first Bengali Governor for the State. Sources said, the outgoing Governor PB Acharya, who is also Governor of Nagaland and Assam, is likely to join the swearing in ceremony.

Interestingly, the ruling CPM has expressed its anger over the unilateral appointment of the Governor. In the process of selection and appointment of Governor for a State, the UPA Government could not come out of the own-political-circle. It seems, the BJP-RSS is proceeding on the same path, it said.

Referring to the recommendation of Sarkaria Commission, the Centre should consult with the State before appointing Governor of a particular State. However, this is not happening which is against the spirit of federal structure.

CPM secretary Bijan Dhar said, The Governor will have to work within the framework of the Constitution. If he crosses the Laxman Rekha, the party will spearhead a massive agitation.

While the BJP is upbeat over the appointment of Tathagata Roy, the main opposition Congress is yet to react on the appointment of the new Governor.
