New students� union of Jorhat Law College elected

JORHAT, June 3 - The election of Jorhat Law College Students� Union was held on May 24. A new students� union of the college headed by Ritupal Borthakur as president, Biswajit Mech as vice-president and Ronnie Phukan as general secretary respectively were elected by the students, a press note issued by the Principal of Jorhat Law College, Dr AK Das informed.

The note stated that Parijat Kumar Bora as assistant general secretary, Torun Jyoti Das as legal aid secretary, Satyajit Bora as magazine secretary, Abhijit Saikia as cultural secretary, Gautam Shankar Neog as sports secretary, Richa Barman as social service secretary, Abdul Wasim as debating secretary and Deepjyoti Baruah as the boys� common room secretary respectively were also elected by the students.

The note further stated that two candidates, namely Parbina Sonowal and Puja Das were elected uncontested to the posts of girls� common room and moot court secretaries respectively.

World No Tobacco Day: In the meantime, World No Tobacco Day was observed in island district Majuli with a programme held at the auditorium of Majuli College.

The State Health Department in collaboration with Majuli district administration and the District Legal Services Authority organised the function.

A district administration source informed that the highlight of the programme was the Sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate LN Pegu administering a pledge to all those present on the occasion to abstain from consumption of tobacco and tobacco products in view of its severe harmful effects on the human body.

The source said VDP members, Gaonburhas, ASHA workers, social activists, students and teachers of several educational institutions attended the programme and took the pledge.

The sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate urged the gathering to stick to the pledge as tobacco was a big threat to the human body, and could cause many fatal diseases, the source stated.

The source added that Majuli Revenue Circle Officer Dr Anamika Gogoi gave a power-point presentation on the ill effects on the health of humans due to consumption of tobacco and tobacco-related products.

A short video film on the activities undertaken by the National Tobacco Control Cell (Assam), produced by NHM (Assam) with script and direction by Food Safety Officer (Majuli) Samiran Baruah, was shown as part of the programme. The name of the film is Sansatatak: The Crusader.

The source further stated that Deputy Superintendent of Police of Majuli Gitartha Dev Sarmah too spoke on the occasion.

Sarmah in his address mentioned about the anti-tobacco law - Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 or COTPA-2003 and the legal provisions under the said Act which prohibits sale of tobacco and tobacco products in certain areas.

Earlier, the Sub-Divisional Medical and Health Officer (Kamalabari) Dr Bimal Pegu explained about the objective of organising the programme.

Among several other prominent persons, the Principal of Majuli College Dr Debojit Saikia was also present at the function.
