By Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG, May 29 - Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Donkupar Roy today administered the oath of office to the newly-elected MLA from the Selsella constituency, Ferlin CA Sangma, at the Old Assembly Secretariat here.

Sangma had contested on a National Peoples Party ticket and defeated her nearest rival, June Eliana Marak of the Congress, by 4,396 votes in the recent by-election held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha elections.

She will enter the 10th Meghalaya Legislative Assembly as the 21st MLA of the NPP. The NPP has become the single largest party in the 60-member House. The Congress is the second largest party with 19 MLAs, followed by the United Democratic Party.

Addressing media persons after the swearing-in-ceremony said, Sangma admitted that the Selsella constituency is one of the underdeveloped Assembly segments in the State.

The new legislator, a former bureaucrat, said that she is committed to working for the development of the people of her constituency.

In the next four years, I will work for the growth and development of the constituency with special emphasis on education and road connectivity, she said.

The Selsella by-poll was held after the demise of Congress MLA and former minister Clement Marak.
