New regional party floated

By Correspondent

DIPHU, Feb 12 A new regional political party has been floated in Karbi Anglong district with an aim to rejuvenate the Statehood demand. The party was floated by leaders of the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC), Hills State Demand Council (HSDC).

The new party was announced at a two-day convention for Statehood held at the Karbi Anglong Sports Association (KASA) ground here from Monday.

At the convention, former leaders of the then ASDC, Dr Jayanta Rongpi, Jotson Bey and Holiram Terang formed the HSDC to carry forward the Statehood demand with transformed dynamism.

The newly-floated political party accepted seven resolutions without stipulating whether a separate State would be demanded outside the geographical limits of Assam or an autonomous State on the basis of Article 244(A) of the Indian Constitution.

The new party alleged that the ruling Congress was undermining the existing autonomy of the KAAC and the political rights of the hill people granted through the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 1995.

It also flayed the BJP for going back on its commitment made during the last Parliamentary elections.
