New Nagaland Governor to take oath on Aug 1

By Correspondent

DIMAPUR, July 23 - Nagaland Governor-designate RN Ravi will take the oath of office on August 1, sources said. Ravi will arrive in the State on July 30 or July 31.

Outgoing Governor PB Acharyas tenure ended on July 18.

Sources said a State farewell would be accorded to Acharya in Kohima on July 25. The outgoing octogenarian Governor will leave the State by the end of this week. However, he is expected to hold charge till Ravis swearing-in.

Ravi has been the Centres interlocutor for the Naga peace talks since August 2014. His appointment as Governor came as a surprise to many in Nagaland, particularly the Naga political groups.

While some believe that the Naga political problem would be resolved soon with his appointment as the Governor, others feel the solution to the Naga issue would be delayed.

Ravi signed the framework agreement with the NSCN (I-M), the group spearheading the Naga peace talks, on August 3, 2015, on behalf of the Centre and another agreement with the working committee of six Naga national political groups on November 17, 2017.

Meanwhile, the Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) today welcomed the appointment of Ravi as the new Governor of the State. In a release, it said Ravi has been the Central Governments interlocutor for a considerable number of years and has in-depth knowledge of the issue and Naga political history.

The NTC hoped that Ravis new role would expedite the dialogue between the Centre and Naga political groups in finding an amicable solution to the Naga political problems.
