DIBRUGARH, Aug 18 One of the oldest and deprived communities of the state, the Muttocks have formed a new non-political organisation to press for the demands of the community.
Named the Asom Muttock Yuva Federation (AMYF in short), the new organisation states equal development of all ethnic communities of Assam as its motto.
The organisation was formed after a meeting of a large number of leading citizens of the community, held on August 15 at the Manav Kalyan Bhavan at Tinsukia, with Amrit Rajkhowa in the chair. Those who attended were from various areas of the Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts. Incidentally, these two districts have a high concentration of Muttock population.
Speaking on the occasion, Rajkhowa said the time has come for a united organisation to lead the Muttock community in socio-economic activities after taking into consideration modern day thoughts. He said the community has never lagged behind in valour, history, literature and culture. Even so, the community has not been able to achieve what it has yearned for, in the past six decades. A major demand of the community is for inclusion in the ST list.
An ad-hoc executive committee of the organisation was constituted at the meeting, with Nripen Chandra Gohain as president, Amrit Rajkhowa as working president, Biju Khound and Thomas Baruah as vice presidents, Pronab Baruah as general secretary, Simanta Gogoi and Bidyut Bikash Baruah as assistant secretaries, Mukut Baruah as cultural secretary, Dhan Gohain as games secretary and Mohan Baruah as the treasurer. Apart from these office bearers ten others have been co-opted as executive committee members.
