New Meghalaya Assembly building likely by 2022

By Staff Correspondent

SHILLONG, Sept 9 - Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh today expressed hope that the 2022 budget session of the Assembly would be held at the new Assembly building coming up at Mawdiangdiang. We would like to hold the 2022 budget session in the new Assembly building, Lyngdoh said.

The Speaker, along with Urban Affairs Minister Hamletson Dohling, Chief Secretary MS Rao and other senior officials, today visited the construction site and reviewed the progress of works.

Lyngdoh said that holding the 2022 budget session in the new building would be significant as Meghalaya would be celebrating its 50th year of Statehood that year.

The State does not have a permanent Assembly building after the heritage Assembly building at Police Bazaar was gutted in a blaze in 2001. The Assembly sessions have since been held at the State Central Library. It is now being held at Rilbong, as a temporary arrangement.

The new building is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 127 crore. The PWD, which is the implementing agency of the project, has been sanctioned Rs 60 crore for this so far.

The State Government has extended all assistance to the project, while assuring adequate and timely disbursement of funds. The new Assembly will have state-of-the-art facilities, including a special water supply scheme.
