New executive committee of Asam Sahitya Sabha formed

NAGAON, April 23 - The new executive committee of Asam Sahitya Sabha was formed for the session 2018 -2020 at the first sitting held under the presidentship of Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi at the Chandra Kanta Handique Bhawan, Jorhat recently. This was informed here by its secretary general Padum Rajkhowa.

The list includes all the former presidents of the Sabha and the Vice-Chancellors of all the Universities of the State. Besides them, Akademi Award winning litterateur Dr Dhrubajyoti Bora, Bipul Deuri, Jayanta Madhab Bora, Suryya Hazarika, Prahlad Ch Tasa, Dr Joyshree Goswami Mahanta (editor of the Patrika), Dr Basanta Kr Goswami, writer journalist Anuradha Sarma Pujari, writer Dr Parag Kumar Bhattacharjyya, Mani Kuntala Bhattacharjyya, Dr Basanta Kr Sarma, Thaneswar Malakar, Rati Mohan Nath, Padumi Gogoi, Bhupen Saikia, Bimal Rajkhowa, Siddhartha Sankar Bezborooah, Ajit Singner, Ratneswar Basumatari, Aloo Nunisa, Tulika Chetia Yein, Indramani Rajkumar, Dr Anil Saikia, Dr Charu Saharia Nath, Dr Nanda Singh Borkola, Dr Sarat Borkotoki, Deba Prasad Talukdar, Dr Ganesh Pegu, Hridayananda Gogoi, Gopal Jalan and Dr Chabi Gogoi included in the list as honourable members of the executive.

In the legal advisory committee Bijon Mahajan, Jayanta Madhab Sarma, Dr Jogen Kalita, Dr Nanigopal Mahanta, Dr Kanak Ch Saharia, Dr Arpana Konwar, Dr Satyakam Borthakur, Dr Akhil Ranjan Dutta, Dr Parag Kumar Thakur, Dr Rabin Das, Dr Hitesh Das, Sajimuddin Ahmed, Dr Ashish Baidya, Dr Geeta Sarkar, Dr Munmani Devi, Dr Rabindra Teron, Dr Madhab Dutta, Dr Ganeswar Saharia, Dr Bhubaneswar Deka, Biren Borooah and Ram Sagar Nath.

A number of mediapersons were also nominated as members of the executive committee. They included Utpal Borooah, Biswajit Das, Prakash Mahanta, Robin Bhuyan, Pankaj Kumar Nath, Keshab Kalita etc.

Administrative officer Swapnanil Borooah, former president of the Principals� Council, Dr Balendra Kumar Das, Arunjyoti Moran (president of the Moran Students� Union), former judge Dr Mukundakam Sarma, Advocate Singheswar Prasad Rai, Dr Dharanidhar Goswami (Deputy Secretary of HS Council), Dr Dibyajyoti Mahanta (Dean of KK Handique University), are also in the list.

Businessman Kanak Kumar Bora is the treasurer of the Sabha. Abani Muhan Saharia has been nominated as the convener of the Trust fund. Writer Ramanadan Bora and Prof Dr Sanjib Sarma were appointed as the secretaries of the Jorhat and Guwahati offices of the Sabha respectively. Secretaries of the other regional offices of the Sabha are Manju Hazarika (Diphu), Hemen Chakrawarty (Dhubri), Aditya Saikia (Dibrugarh), Sanjib Medhi (Silchar), Bipul Saikia (Lakhimpur), Jatindra Nath Sut (Nagaon), Ganesh Ch Nath (Jalah) and Sailen Rajbongshi (Mangaldai).

Mitali Saikia, Pankaj Kr Dutta and Sahir Bhuyan were appointed as the spokespersons of the Sabha. The Sabha also entrusted a number of persons as the conveners and working presidents of different sub-committees.

A nine-member steering committee of the Asam Sahitya Sabha was also formed with Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi (president), Dr Hemanta Kumar Borooah (vice-president), Padum Rajkhowa (secretary general), Kanak Kumar Bora (treasurer), former incharge secretary general Abani Mohan Saharia, Samiran Bordoloi, Bijon Mahajan, Dr Balendra Kumar Das and Nurul Sultan.

Citizenship Amendment Bill opposed: The Asam Sahitya Sabha opposes the move of the Central Government to amend the Citizenship Act to give citizenship to Bangladeshi Hindus. If this happens, then the Assamese language and culture would be in danger and this would dishonour the martyrs of the Assam Agitation. This was observed by the Asam Sahitya Sabha, said its president Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi and secretary general Padum Rajkhowa in a signed statement issued at Nagaon here.
