AGARTALA, Oct 4 - Vikram Kumar Doraiswami, India�s High Commissioner-designate to Bangladesh, today visited Sabroom and Belonia subdivisions in Tripura bordering the neighbouring country to see the ongoing construction of the Feni bridge, and other connectivity and trade projects.
The 150-metre long, four-lane bridge across the Feni is being built between India and Bangladesh, where the river forms the border between the two countries.
During his visit, Doraiswami, who is all set to assume office at the Indian High Commission in Dhaka tomorrow, spoke to District Magistrate, South, Debapriya Bardhan and the general manager of the agency which is constructing the bridge.
Sources said the Indian envoy requested the construction agency to complete the work by November even though it is scheduled to be completed in December.
He also met Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and discussed various bilateral issues here yesterday.
The Chief Minister requested him to take up issues related to the State with the Bangladesh Government for mutual benefit.
Speaking to reporters after meeting the Chief Minister, Vikram Doraiswami said that the Northeast is �central� to Prime Minister Narendra Modi�s vision of �stronger, resilient and modern� India.
Doraiswami arrived here from Delhi en route to Dhaka by road as international fights are yet to resume due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sources said Deb and Doraiswami discussed issues ranging from railway connectivity to trade and investment in Tripura as Sabroom is going to become a hub of economic activities in the region.
Sources said the Chief Minister requested him to encourage Bangladeshi entrepreneurs to invest in the State.
�Now the State has a lot to offer due to availability of gas and raw materials like pineapples, jackfruits, cashew nuts besides quality power supply,� Deb told Doraiswami.
Deb also briefed him about the upcoming projects at Sarboom that could change the volume of bilateral trade.
�Bangladesh will also benefit from the Feni bridge because transportation of goods to and from the Northeast will take place through this route. This will create jobs. The construction of double-lane Ramgarh-Chittagong road must be expedited for seamless trade and business,� the Chief Minister pointed out to him.
There was an elaborate discussion on the railway connectivity too.
�Focus must be on expediting the Agartala-Akhaura railway link with Bangladesh. Both sides will also be benefited if the Belonia-Feni meter gauge link is converted into broad gauge,� Deb added.
