New body of Assam varsity students union takes charge

By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

SILCHAR, Oct 11 - A day after the new body of Assam University Students Union (AUSU) was formed, the elected members led by the union president Abhinandan Mahanta and general secretary Debapratim Saha were administered pledge by Prof PB Majumder, the Dean, Students Welfare on Wednesday.

Interestingly, the office of the Vice Chancellor which has remained locked for the past 12 days was opened by the outgoing union on its last working day.

Later, the union members sat with the Vice Chancellor in a meeting and discussed some key issues as well.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, Milon Das, former president of Assam University Students Union said, Following the satisfactory responses in the form of documents submitted to the court by the university regarding the case of Prof Sameer Behera, who is accused of harassing students, we decided to open the office of the Vice Chancellor. It was also the last working day for us as a part of the union and we understand that ahead of the Durga Puja holidays, many vital issues regarding salaries and other affairs are lying pending. Hence, we wanted to end the day on a good note. But if there is any further dilly-dallying by the university authorities in submitting documents in the case, we shall not hesitate to launch a democratic stir again.
