NESO to hold sit-in protest in Guwahati

SHILLONG, June 1 � Irked over the indifference meted out to North East students in the mainland India, different students organisations under the banner of North East Students Organisation (NESO), on Thursday announced its first phase of agitations beginning with a sit-in-protest on June 7 at Guwahati.

Addressing a press conference in Shillong, NESO Information and Publicity Secretary and former Khasi Students Union president, Samuel B Jyrwa said, �We have decided to stage a one-day sit-in-protest in Guwahati on June 7, over the failure of the Central Government to address various issues affecting the North East region.�

�The decision to go for a sit-in protest in Guwahati was taken after the general council meeting of the NESO held at Guwahati on May 29,� Jyrwa informed.

He also informed that it is the first phase of agitation to demand on the Central Government to address the issues pertaining to the North East.

�Discrimination against students of North East studying in different parts of country is one of the serious issues which have tormented us. We demand the government to safe-guard the lives of Northeastern students studying in main land India,� Jyrwa asserted adding �The other issues of concern are, influx, lifting of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from NE, separate Ministry for North East and scrapping of the Indo- Nepal Treaty from NE.�

He added that NESO also demands the implementation of the �Inner Line Regulation� permit in the entire North East.

Jyrwa also informed that the sit-in-protest would be followed by a march and sit-in-strike in front of the Governor Houses of all the Northeastern States, the dates for which will be decided on June 7 in Guwahati.
