NESO protest in Delhi against citizenship Bill

GUWAHATI, Dec 19 - The students from the NE region staged demonstration at the Jantar Mantar, under the banner of the Northeast Students� Organisation (NESO) to register their protest against the bid of the Union Government to bring amendments to the Citizenship Act of the country.

According to a press release received here this evening, students from the region studying in Delhi academic institutions and the representatives of the students' bodies affiliated to the NESO, like the All Assam Students� Union (AASU), All Arunachal Pradesh Students� Union (AAPSU), All Manipur Students� Union (AMSU), Khasi Students� Union (KSU), Garo Students� Union (GSU), Naga Students� Federation (NSF), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) and the Tripura Students� Federation (TSF) took part in the demonstration.

The demonstrators demanded immediate withdrawal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016; the Foreigners� (Amendment) Order, 2015; Passport (Entry into India) Rules, 2015 and Long-term Visa proposed by the Union Government. They warned the Union Government that the situation in the region would become explosive if it (Union Government) insists on imposing the Bill, Order, Rules, etc., on its people. The indigenous peoples of the region will continue their agitations against all the bids of the Union Government to marginalize them in their homeland, the protestors said.

The impromptu meeting held at the venue of the demonstration, was addressed by the top leaders of the constituent organisation of the NESO.

The leaders of the other organisations like Pramod Boro of the All Bodo Students� Union (ABSU), Mahen Chutiya of the All Assam Chutiya Students� Union, and representatives of the Janata Dal (United) met the demonstrators and expressed their solidarity with them (demonstrators).

The leaders of all the students� bodies, besides the top leaders of the NESO, alleged that for the Indian rulers, India does not exist beyond Kolkata in the east. Therefore, they have been subjecting the peoples of the NE region to various sorts of injustice and persecution.
