Neigrihms board to decide on BNP leader

By Correspondent

SHILLONG, May 22 A medical board of the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) would prepare a medical report on the health of detained Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader, Salahuddin Ahmed.

Ahmed, who was referred to NEIGHRIHMS for treatment of complications, has undergone extensive medical tests today and some of the reports have come while others are awaited, a senior NEIGRIHMS official told The Assam Tribune.

He said Ahmed is suffering from heart and kidney-related ailments. He has blood in his urine and so he is going under intensive tests at NEIGRIHMS, the official said.

At the moment Ahmed is under intensive care of the institute: the Medical Board would decide on what course of medical care he (Ahmed) should be provided, the official added.

The BNP leader has been referred to NEIGRIHMS from Shillong Civil Hospital.

Dr DJ Goswami from Shillong Civil Hospital said that Ahmed can get the best treatment at NEIGRIHMS and added it is untrue that his ailments can be treated at hospitals at Singapore as claimed by his close aides and family.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya police have said that Ahmed would be produced in the Court once he is fit. The police are waiting for medical clearance for producing him in Court for illegal entry into India.

Ahmeds mysterious entry into India has raised several questions about the time and manner he got into India without valid papers. Indian security agencies are also being blamed for lapses.

The case is also being viewed as one of political vendetta where the opposition BNP members are being victimised. After Ahmed surfaced in Shillong, an Interpol notice was issued for his arrest.
