NEHU students seek respite from woes

By Newmai News

SHILLONG, Feb 14 - Students of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) have decided to serve the university authorities a one-month deadline to address grievances they are currently facing.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the joint action committee comprising the NEHU Teachers Association (NEHUTA) and other student bodies held here today.

We have decided to submit a memorandum to the NEHU authorities, demanding immediate resolution of problems within a months time, finance secretary of the NEHU Students Union (NEHUSU), Iarapbhathik Shangrit, said here.

Shangrit said that erratic power and water supply have created a lot of problems for students of the university since 2014. He rued that despite memoranda being submitted on several occasions, no action was taken on by the NEHU authorities in this regard.

The problem of irregular electricity supply in the campus has become a daily affair and due to this, the water supply has also been disrupted due to which students do not have access to safe drinking water, Shangrit said.

He also urged the university authorities to resolve issues related to hostel facilities as a lot of students are yet to get accommodation.

We want the authorities to address the concern related to restrictions imposed on hostellers, he added. Shangrit said that the issues would also be taken up at the NEHUSU general body meeting to be held on February 22 next.

Meanwhile, in Thursdays meeting, the NEHUTA also demanded of the varsity authorities to resolve issues related to filling up of vacant teachers posts.
