Neglect of research work in Indian varsities must be reversed: Prof Dash

SILCHAR, March 14 - Even as higher education in India has witnessed manifold increase in its institutional capacity since Independence, no Indian University has been able to produce a Nobel Prize winner, said AP Dash, Vice Chancellor of Central University of Tamil Nadu (CUTN).

Delivering the convocation address to the graduating students and degree holders at the 17th convocation of Assam University Silchar on Thursday, Prof Dash said, �The last person to win Nobel Prize working in India was Dr CV Raman way back in 1930. Dr Amartya Sen, Dr S Chandrashekhar, Dr Har Gobind Khorana and Dr Venkataraman Ramakrishnan � all were graduates from Indian universities but won the prestigious award working in universities of the US. We must put efforts to change the situation and for that the neglect of research in our universities must be reversed.�

Referring to the recent CII survey, Prof Dash said that only 2 per cent of India�s work force is skilled as compared to 54 per cent in Singapore, 49 per cent in Israel and 42.2 per cent in the US. According to him, education imparted to students at the universities should be relevant to their future lives.

The CUTN Vice Chancellor congratulated Assam University Silchar and the Vice Chancellor Prof Dilip Chandra Nath for rendering yeomen services to the North East and for the country at large.

It may be mentioned here that 5935 students were conferred degrees for the courses of PhD, MPhil, post graduate, integrated, diploma and three-year degree, BEd, BTech, BSW, BVA, B Pharma LLB and other courses. The students had passed out in 2018 and in certain cases in 2019. Bindiya Singha, a graduate in Physics from Cachar College was awarded the �Best Girl Graduate� for securing highest marks in the 1st class honours degree among Arts, Science and Commerce streams.
