NEEPCO fraternity seeks public support against Centres move

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 29 - Altogether four trade unions of the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) today appealed to all parties, organisations and elected representatives of the region to raise their voice against the move of the Union government to merge the entity with other central public sector undertakings (CPSUs).

Leaders of the NEEPCO Workers Union, NEEPCO Employees Union, NEEPCO Labourers Union and Federation of NEEPCO Employees Union made the appeal during a press conference here today.

We firmly believe that it is not a prudent decision considering the overall interest of the region. Considering the progress achieved by NEEPCO in the north-eastern region, it is felt that the operation of the entity would be far more result-oriented if it is allowed to continue and perform as a distinct corporate identity, the leadership of the trade unions of NEEPCO said.

They further said that for over four decades NEEPCO has served the region well in terms of power generation and met the aspirations of the people at large. The record of its performance is well established and it has kept on growing and expanding its base. NEEPCO has remained a profit-making company all along and has been paying its due share of dividend to the Government of India every year.

NEEPCO is not only a people-oriented organisation; it has contributed to a great extent by way of providing employment to the people. The north-eastern region has been suffering from multiple problems and NEEPCO has played a crucial role in opening various opportunities for the youths in general and more than 90 per cent of its workforce belongs to the north-eastern region. Under such a situation, the move of the Central government to merge NEEPCO with other CPSUs or to effect a strategic sale of its stake is very shocking for us, they added.
