NORTH LAKHIMPUR, June 29 Water released from the Ranganadi power plant dam of the North East Electrical Power Corporation (NEEPCO) at Yazali inside Arunachal Pradesh has flooded North Lakhimpur for second day today.

The excess water at the dam over the river released by the NEEPCO from its sluice gate No. 3 and No. 5 since Saturday has been flooding various downstream areas around North Lakhimpur marooning villagers who went outdoors for agricultural work and cattle herding. Seventy five persons from No. 1 Ujani Pachnoi and Dejoo Pathar were stranded in their paddy fields as the rising waters of river Ranganadi submerged their routes to home following release of water from the NEEPCOs dam. The marooned villagers, 40 males, 25 females and 10 children, that remained stranded on the open filed overnight were rescued by the NDRF personnel on Sunday morning.

The access water released by the NEEPCO on Ranganadi caused extensive erosions on its embankment on its right hand side from the 1800 to 4200 meter area. Though the NEEPCO authorities had intimated the Lakhimpur district authorities about the opening of its two sluice gates on Saturday, the amount of water on the river signalled release of water through more gates with debris and mucks. The flood water of Ranganadi inundated many areas including residential and agricultural lands in Pahumora today.

Meanwhile, a person lost his life while trying to rescue his two brothers in flood water caused by the NEEPCOs released water in North Lakhimpur. The victim has been identified as Bhaben Lahon (26).
