SUALKUCHI, Nov 19 - The Kamrup district administration in collaboration with the Kamrup District Journalists� Association observed the National Press Day on Friday by organising a seminar on �Morality in journalism: Challenges in digital era� at the district headquarters Amingaon.
Participating in the discourse, Prakash Mahanta, Associate Editor, Asomiya Pratidin stressed the need to focus on the potential of historical and cultural heritage of the North Guwahati area, which was the military headquarters of Ahom general Lachit Barphukan, who led his army to fight against the Mughals. He called upon the Deputy Commissioner Kamal Kumar Baishya, to build up the entire North Guwahati area as a heritage site to attract tourists.
Speaking at the seminar chaired by the Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup, Jogendra Bharali, a senior journalist emphasised on preserving the greater values of freedom of expression and the right of the people to know. Bhairab Sarma, president, Kamrup District Journalists� Association recalled the sacrifice of Kamala Saikia, who laid down his life to make the press worthy of absolute freedom. Siva Charan Kalita, while speaking in the meeting, said that sincerity is the basic code of ethics of journalism. Rajat Baishya, founder president, Kamrup District Journalists� Association and Paresh Kalita, former president, Kamrup District Journalists� Association also spoke in the meeting.
In his address, Kamal Kumar Baishya, Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup expressed his gratitude to the journalists for their contribution to the well-being of the society.
Earlier, Pranab Das, District Information Officer delivered the welcome address and Lakhi Deka, secretary, Kamrup District Journalists� Association offered the vote of thanks.
ANN Service from Kaliabor adds: The National Press Day was observed at the Kaliabor subdivisional office auditorium on November 16 in the presence of several mediapersons. The event was organised with the cooperation of the Kaliabor Press Club and Mahkuma Sanbadik Santha.
Debasis Sarma, associate professor of JB College, Jorhat, who was the chief guest, gave a lecture on �Morality of journalists and challenges in the digital age�. Sarma spoke on news reporting and strictly following the ethics of journalism.
At the outset, NN Hazarika lit a lamp and offered tributes to those who sacrificed their lives for the country, while Bitupon Neog, ADC/SDO in-charge of Kaliabar, also spoke on the occasion.
ANN Service from Badarpur adds: National Press Day was observed here on November 16 along with the rest of the country. On the occasion, a meeting was held at the Karimganj Deputy Commissioner�s office, where several speakers explained the significance of the day.
DC Pradeep Kumar Talukder, Karimganj�s district development commissioner Barenya Das, Karimganj DIPRO SH Choudhuree, former professor of Karimganj College Sukhendu Sekhar Dutta, and professor of the Mass Communication Department of Karimganj Rabindra Sadan Girls� College Bajlur Noor narrated their experiences.
The speakers said that due to various reasons, employees of media houses are facing moral dilemmas as well as tremendous financial crisis.
Dainik Nababarta Prasanga editor Habibur Rahman Choudhuree appealed to the district administration to take stern steps against fake news being circulated in social media. DC Talukder advised all mediapersons to do their duty honestly, especially in the digital age.
