Need for survey on substance abuse stressed

GUWAHATI, Sept 2 - A one-day State-level consultation meet on �National survey on extent and pattern of substance abuse in Assam� was held at Swahid Nyas Bhawan, Uzanbazar here on September 1.

This national survey programme is undertaken by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, in association with the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre (NDDTC) of the AIIMS, New Delhi.

The meeting was attended by Dr Jayanta Kumar, Director, Regional Resource and Training Centre (RRTC) NE-1, Imphal, Luish Aind, DCP, Crime, Guwahati, Naba Kumar Tamuly, Deputy Director, Social Welfare Department, Government of Assam, and Dr S Gajendra Singh, RIMS Imphal, as resource persons. The speakers highlighted the importance of the survey as well as its technical approach.

More than 20 NGOs representatives working for the prevention of alcoholism and substance abuse were present in the meet along with other invitees.

Dr Sandip Hanse, State Coordinator, RRTC NE I, said household surveys will be conducted in Dibrugarh, Nagaon, Sonitpur, Barpeta, Baksa and Cachar from this month-end.
