GORESWAR, Feb 10 � The 43rd biennial meet of Sadou Asom Saloi Sanmelan (SASS) concluded at Sadagar Khetra, Gashbari in Kamrup district (R) recently.
The open session was held with Munindra Kumar Deka, president, SASS in the chair. In the session Achyut Baruah, retired headmaster inaugurated it. In his inaugural speech, he urged the Saloi community to hold such meetings regularly.
Dinesh Deka, information and publicity officer, Assam was the chief guest of the function. Deka in his speech said that there is no trace of the Saloi community�s identify either in ancient history or in other research books available in Assam with the result that even though himself belonging to this community he is confused as to his origins. He therefore, stressed on doing research on the culture of the Saloi community of Assam to ascertain the true facts.
Riju Hazarika, distinguished literateur addressing the function as appointed speaker said �we are not a poor community because there are a bulk of able administrators like IAS, ACS and other highly qualified people like doctorate degree holders, educationist, great writers, teachers of colleges and universities, scientists etc. in and outside Assam and India from the community.
Hazarika further appealed to the young generation of the community to follow their own Assamese culture avoiding the western and modern culture. Pradip Saloi, superintendent of police, Guwahati city took part in the function as distinguished guest. He also spoke on the need of identification of the roots of the Saloi community. Further, he stressed on the need of the formation of the basic character of human being to create a congenial social environment to stop and control the nefaricious activities of outfits like ULFA and NDFB etc in the State in the interest of peace and prosperity of the society.
Among others Jadab Deka, Kiran Kakati, Kamalesh Deka etc. spoke on the occasion which was followed by the welcome address of the chairperson Munindra Kumar Deka.
Earlier, a long colourful cultural procession was taken out thorough the main Goreswar Suklai and Gashbari-Mahajanpara PWD roads and it was inaugurated by Sishupal Nath, cine actor.
A seminar on the topic � �The contribution of different ethnic groups in formation of the bulk Assamese nation� was held at 12 am while Padma Ram Saloi, veteran educationist and ex-president SASS conducted it. Trailakya Saloi, principal, Nalbari College, Siva Borooah, president, Darrang Zila Saloi Sanmelani and Jiten Saloi, social worker of Chaygaon Village took part in it as resource person. A souvenir brought out on the occasion was also released by Riju Hazarika at 7 pm.
On the first day, according to the schedule programme at 5 am Bijoy Chandra Kakati performed the �prabhat fery� which was followed by the flag hoisting by Tarun Chandra Kakati. President, reception committee at 8 am. Lohit Chandra Kakati, executive president of the committee performed swahid tarpan at 9 am while other programme like sapling plantation, drawing competition, opening of delegate camp, delegate reception, delegate meet, lighting of lamp and subject selection meet etc were held respectively.
Later a 13-member new committee was formed in the delegate meet with Munindra Kumar Deka, as president, Sadananda Talukdar as executive president. Manik Kakati, Lohit Kakati, Durgeswar Saharia as vice-president, Prabhat Kakati as secretary, Gajen Saloi, Paresh Thakuria, Padmeswar Saharia as asstt. secretaries, Tarun Chandra Kakati as publicity secretary, Nagen Kakati and Lankeswar Kakati as organising secretary and Bireswar Baruah as literature and cultural secretary.
