Need for action to address climate emergencies stressed

GUWAHATI, Sept 28 - A two-day national seminar was organised by the Department of Chemistry, B Borooah College, in association with the Assam Science Technology & Environment Council (ASTEC), Govt of Assam, on September 25-26, stated a delayed press release issued here.

The seminar started on September 25 at 10 am with a welcome address by B Borooah College Principal Dr Satyendra Nath Barman, which was followed by an address by Vice Principal Dr Sutopa Raichaudhury stating the objective of the seminar.

The seminar was inaugurated by ASTEC Director Dr Arup Kumar Misra, who touched upon the theme of the seminar �Science for sustainable development�. The guest of honour for the inaugural session was the Vice Chancellor of Madhavdeb University Prof Dibakar Ch Deka.

Eminent climatologist and Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award winner Prof Bhupendra Nath Goswami, who is presently SERB Distinguished Fellow at the Department of Physics, Cotton University, delivered the keynote address on the topic �Climate emergency: Why need to stop denying and act now.�

The seminar was attended by 162 participants from different institutions of India � Delhi University, IIT Kanpur, IISER Kolkata, IIT Guwahati, Shiv Nadar University (Noida), NISER (Bhubaneswar), Tezpur University, North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, Cotton University, Gauhati University (GU), NERIST (Arunachal Pradesh), Royal Global University, Assam Don Bosco University, Kaziranga University, and many other reputed colleges, universities and scientific institutions.

In the invited lecture session, Prof Prodeep Phukan of the Department of Chemistry, GU, Prof Ramesh Ch Deka of the Department of Chemical Sciences, Tezpur University, and Prof Ghanasyam Bez of the Department of Chemistry, NEHU, delivered talks on their works, providing thought-provoking directions to the upcoming researchers. The technical sessions were chaired by Dr Manjit Kr Bhattacharyya of the Department of Chemistry, Cotton University, Dr Saroj Kr Bhattacharyya of Mark Wainwright Analytical Centre, University of New South Wales, Australia, Dr Jaideep Barua of ASTEC and Dr Rupam Jyoti Sarma of the Department of Chemistry, GU.

In the oral presentation, more than 50 scientists and research scholars presented their works while several others participated in the poster presentation by displaying their works on Facebook. The poster presentations were judged by Dr Ranjit Thakuria and Dr Tridib Goswami, Department of Chemistry, GU.

The seminar concluded with a valedictory session in which convener Dr Bijoy S Goswami, Department of Chemistry, B Borooah College and co-convener Pradyumna Mazumdar of the same department offered the vote of thanks.
