NEC project for surrendered ultras in State

NEW DELHI, June 17 � After successfully completing its vocational training programme for surrendered militants in Tripura, the North Eastern Council (NEC) is keen to launch a similar project for the surrendered militants in Assam.

In Tripura, some 800 rebels were given vocational training by the NEC at the end of the course the ex-militants were given tools to start their life afresh. The course was started to give vocational training to the surrendered youths so that they give up arms, said an official, adding that the course has been completed.

�We are willing to provide training in Assam, if the State Government so desires,� said the official.

Assam has the highest number of surrendered militants belonging to various militant outfits including ULFA, NDFB, UPDS, DHD amongst others. The militants most of whom are living in designated camps currently avail of the rehabilitation package for surrendered militants started by the Union Home Ministry under which they get monthly stipends, soft loans and vocational training over a period of time.
