NE women achievers felicitated

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 27 The FICCI Ladies Organization (FLO), Northeast Chapter on Friday felicitated a few women achievers of the region at a function held at the NEDFi House here.

The FLO NE Women Achievers Award for Excellence was presented by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to Birubala Rabha, Meena Debbarma, G Lalthanzami, and Tongam Rina.

Another awardee Rupshika Borah was not present at the function. She is the director (finance) of OIL since October 2013 and will be taking over as the CMD of OIL in July 2015.

Accepting the award, Birubala Rabha said that her work has changed her perspective about life and it has inspired her to continue her fight against witch-hunting. It is worth mentioning that despite the challenges that are regularly thrown to check her mission, this woman is almost single-handedly leading the crusade against witch-hunting.

Women should unite for building a progressive society. They should join our mission to eradicate superstition and stop witch- hunting, said Birubala Rabha observing that witch-hunting is not confined among the illiterate and poor only. This practice was prevalent, in the form of killing a woman for dowry, even among the educated and the affluent, she pointed out.

Journalist from Arunachal Pradesh Tongam Rina expressing her pleasure at being felicitated said that this honour is a great encouragement for her. She had hit the headlines when she was shot at by two gunmen in 2012 outside the entrance of her office.

G Lalthanzami from Mizoram extended her gratitude to the organizers for supporting and honouring her work with the award. She runs a Safe Home for Women who have suffered domestic abuse.

On the other hand, Meena Debbarma from Tripura said that the award is like a platform for the achievers to share their experiences and go ahead with renewed motivation. She is an actor and besides acting she has been advocating the cause of tribal rights.

The function was attended by FLO national president Neeta Boochra, Smita Agarwal, chairperson, FLO NE and other dignitaries.
