NE records all-time high June temperatures

By AJIT PATOWARY

GUWAHATI, June 26 Itanagar, Dibrugarh and Kohima today recorded an all-time high maximum (daytime) June temperatures in their history.

According to Sunit Das, Scientist-D of Borjhar-based Regional Meteorology Centre (RMC) here, Itanagar today recorded a maximum temperature of 39.5 degree Celsius, while Dibrugarh recorded 38.2 degree C and Kohima 32.4 degree C during the day.

Earlier, on June 12, 2013, Itanagar had recorded a daytime temperature of 37.5 degree C, while Dibrugarh recorded 38.1 degree C on June 3, 2013 and June 21, 1996 and Kohima recorded 30.8 degree C on June 14, 2013. These were the highest daytime June temperatures of these NE towns till date. But their records today have surpassed these old records, Das said.

The RMC Scientist attributed this situation to the presence of a low pressure system over south-east Bangladesh, which is associated with an upper air cyclonic circulation extending up to 4.5 km above the mean sea level. Due to this system, wind pattern over NE is mainly northeasterly and easterly and this is causing a rise in the day temperature. However, rainfall is observed in rest of NE, barring its northeastern part, due to this low pressure system and locally developed thunderstorm activities, he said.

Guwahati today recorded a maximum temperature of 35.8 degree C, with Tezpur recording 36.3 degree C, Silchar 34.3 degree C, Dhubri 31.9 degree C, Jorhat 36.3 degree C, North Lakhimpur 38.1 degree C, Shillong 25.5 degree C, Imphal 29.8 degree C, Aizwal 25.9 degree C, Agartala 29.2 degree C, Cherrapunji 23.9 degree C, and Pasighat 37.3 degree C.
