NE prone to high magnitude earthquake

NEW DELHI, Nov 25 � Admitting that the North-east recorded a recurring number of earthquakes of small intensities, the Centre has said that the region lies in seismic zone V, where an earthquake of 8 magnitude could occur.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) developed comprehensive national management guidelines in respect of earthquakes and located National Disaster Response Forces (NDRF) battalions at Guwahati to deal with emergency response actions in coordination with the State Government, said Minister for Earth Sciences, Kapil Sibal.

Micro-zonation of urban areas has been taken up with the support at State level, regional level through North Eastern Council Secretariat and national level institutions.

According to zoning map of the country, the entire NER lie in the Seismic Zone V, he said.
