NE MPs resent NFDC apathy

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 10 The NE MPs Forum has resented the failure of the National Film Development Finance Corporation (NFDC) to create a conducive atmosphere for the completion and national and international release of the Assamese-Hindi bi-lingual film Ekhon Nedekha Nodir Xipaare (As the River Flows) produced by it and directed by award-winning young filmmaker Bidyut Kotoky from Assam.

In a letter to the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni, Forums chairman Mukut Mithi and its general secretary Birendra Prasad Baishya called for the intervention of the Union Minister in the matter.

The Forum leaders said that they are interested in the completion and release of the film, which is perhaps the first ever effort to bring the complex socio-political issues of the NE region to the mainstream cinema of the country.

The topic dealt with by the film is of much importance from the context of the socio-political situation in the NE region in general and Assam in particular, the Forum leaders said in their letter to the Union Minister. They also informed the Union Minister that the shooting of the film was completed on locations in Assam and Mumbai way back in 2009.

It needs mention here that earlier two Assam MPs former DoNER Minister Bijay Krishna Handique and the present DoNER Minister Pawan Singh Ghatowar had written to the Union Minister on the same issue conveying their displeasure on the shoddy treatment meted out to the Assam filmmaker. Incidentally, Ekhon Nedekha Nodir Xipaare is the first film from the NE region, which has been produced by the NFDC.
