SILCHAR, Sept 13 - The North East India Emarat-e-Shariah and Nadwatut Tameer has demanded the immediate removal of state coordinator Prateek Hajela over his recent submission to the Supreme Court on the list of documents needed to be submitted afresh by applicants in the claims and objections phase for the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
The organisation has also pressed for stringent action against the bureaucrat for causing widespread panic and chaos among the people.
Talking to reporters yesterday, Maulana Ataur Rahman Majharbhuiya, former AIUDF legislator from Katigorah constituency and secretary of the Nadwatut Tameer, said �Mr Hajela is responsible for the deaths and disturbances across the state. His fickle decisions on the modalities have triggered great panic among the people who had applied (for inclusion) in the NRC. He must be sacked immediately. Also, he must be accorded punishment for his wrongdoings.�
Hitting out at the BJP-led State government, Majharbhuiya said that without tacit support from the government, Hajela would not have gone with his whims on such a serious issue. �We do not oppose the NRC. However, it has become clear that the process is no longer fair and there is a well-knit plan to target the Bengali-speaking population in the state. The tall promises of protecting the Bengali-speaking people by the government is actually an eyewash to divert the focus. We are hurt by the partial stance of even the Prime Minister,� he said.
The two-time MLA, who was left baffled to find his name missing from the complete draft of the NRC published on July 30 despite being on the first draft, said that they will collect views of other linguistic and religious minority forums and associations on the issue and stage a massive agitation against the one-eyed approach of the government.
�Bengali-speaking people, irrespective of religion, are by no stretch of imagination migrants from Bangladesh. People with valid documents and evidence should be included in the NRC and any unscrupulous intent in this regard shall be strongly opposed. Lakhs of people shall hit the streets in the coming days against the vicious intent by the authorities,� he said.
