GUWAHATI, March 8 - Industry Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary today claimed to have got �positive signals� from the Niti Aayog on reviving the North East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP).
Patowary informed the State Assembly that he recently held a meeting with NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant who is scheduled to arrive in the State tomorrow to discuss the matter further. �We have received positive signals regarding revival of the NEIIPP. A four-member group of consultants from Niti Aayog have already arrived today,� he said.
Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman had earlier indicated that a new industry promotion scheme for the Northeast is being considered by the Centre.
Registration under the schemes of NEIIPP had been stopped since December 1, 2014. The special fiscal package policy for the region came into force in 1997 and lapsed in 2007. The Centre revised the ten-year policy in 2007.
Patowary also informed that the State Government has sent a proposal to the Niti Aayog to develop the country�s fifth industrial corridor through the northeastern region, connecting the Southeast Asian countries of Bangladesh, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, etc. He said that the Niti Aayog has accepted in principle to consider the proposal.
In response to a question in the House, the minister informed that Patanjali Ayurveda will be investing Rs 1,500 crore in the State, with Baba Ramdev informing him that Patanjali�s largest unit till date will be set up in Assam.
