AIZAWL, Aug 31 - Mizoram Agriculture Minister C Lalrinsanga today said that the North East region with 5.5 million hectares of �potential land� is an ideal place for the organic farming mission of India.
The Mizoram minister was speaking at the �Organic Food India Conclave-2019� in Mumbai as the chief guest.
Lalrinsanga said India, which is currently the seventh largest agriculture exporter in the world, has 150 million hectares of agricultural land, of which 5.5 million hectares are located in the North East.
�By 2020, the value of the agriculture market is expected to cross 200 million US dollars,� Lalrinsanga informed the conclave.
In pursuit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi�s commitment to develop the North East as an organic farming hub, the Mission Organic Value Chain Development in North Eastern Region (MOVCD) is being implemented in the North East, Lalrinsanga said.
In Mizoram, cultivation of tea, Mizo chillis, turmeric and ginger is under way under the MOVCD.
�The Mizoram Government has received Geographical Indication tag on the Mizo chilli which has high market potential and needs focus under the MOVCD,� the minister said, adding that Mizoram has the potential to boost farmers� income with the Mizo chilli.
Informing the conclave of Mizoram Government�s initiatives in the fields of organic technology, value chain marketing and market linkage, Lalrinsanga expressed the State�s desire to tie up with global entrepreneurs in the organic movement.
