GUWAHATI, Sept 2 - The golden jubilee celebrations of the North-East India Geographical Society (NEIGS), which was founded in 1968, formally began on August 29 at a function held at the Phanidhar Datta Seminar Hall, Gauhati University.
NEIGS founder member and former Registrar of GU Dr MC Bhuyan launched the celebrations. After observing a minute�s silence in memory of all members who passed away in the last 50 years, NEIGS General Secretary Dr Bimal K Kar spoke about the development of the Society and threw light on the programmes of the golden jubilee celebrations.
The function, presided over by NEIGS president Dr Abani K Bhagabati, was attended by former presidents Prof HN Sharma, Prof NN Bhattacharyya, Prof MM Das, Prof R Barman, Prof S Talukder and Prof SP Sharma.
The golden jubilee celebrations will continue for eight months, starting from September 2018 till April 2019. As many as 50 lectures will be delivered in different colleges, universities and HS schools on geographical themes.
A number of books including on 50 years of NEIGS, golden jubilee souvenir, practical geography, collection of essays from the journal North Eastern Geographer, collection of articles from popular magazine Bhougolika and collection of presidential addresses, will be published.
A national symposium on disparity in development in South Asia with special reference to the North East will also be held.
For making the journal of NEIGS online, a website - www.northeasterngeographer.co.in - designed and developed by Chinmay Raj Saikia and Dr MJ Nath was launched by Prof DC Goswami, and a book titled �North East India: A Comprehensive Geography� authored by Dr Geeta Devee and Puspanjalee Das was also released during the function.
