NE folk fest gets under way

GUWAHATI, Feb 20 � Governor JB Patnaik today inaugurated the North East Folk Dance and Drum Festival at Doordarshan premises today.

Speaking on the occasion, he described the North East as the miniature India with multi-ethnic and multi-cultural identity. �The people of NE India, who live on this land of blue hills and red rivers, reflect a rare accomplishment in the fields of art and culture,� he said and pointed out that former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi had emphasised the need to encourage and preserve the folk and cultural traditions of the people of the region.

He said that the Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati and Programme Production Center North East as the two major centres of the region have the added responsibility of promoting and preserving the cultural heritage of the people.
