NE expedition to Mt Everest in 2011

GUWAHATI, April 24 � The North East Adventure Foundation (NEAF) has set its sights on Mt Everest. Pranoy Bordoloi, member of NEAF today said that in the next year, selected mountaineers from the northeastern States will embark on the mission to scale the highest peak in the world. Addressing a press conference today, Bordoloi said that the foundation is mulling the idea of setting up a exclusive mountaneering institute in the North East with its headquarters in Guwahati.

In September, 35 mountaineers will be chossen out of which 21 will selected for the expedition. �Of course all the 21 will not get the oppourtunity to scale the peak due to finincial constraints,� said Bordoloi.

The meeting was also attended by president of the Indian Mountaneering Foundation (IMF) Ramakrishna Rao, its secretary HS Chavan and Principal of the Himalayan Mountaneering Institute Col VS Rana.

Col Rana said that the youth of the North East should be exposed to adventure sports and the region has a lot to deliver in terms of adventure sports talent. He also wished the North East expedition all the best.

Chavan said that the IMF will give its full support to the expedition but refrained from speaking on the financial angle. It mey be mentioned here that for an expedition to the Everest, more than Rs 2 crore has to be incurred.

The meeting was also attended by mountaineers from the entire North East, member of NEAF Naschim Akhtar and national coach of sports climbing Kirti Pious.
