AGARTALA, May 24 The North East can be a food surplus region in the country as the ill-effects of climate change had not much impact here, a top agricultural scientist said.

This region can be a food surplus region in the country because the ill-effects of climate change is not much and soil and water quality is better than any other part of the country, Director General of ICAR, Dr S Ayyappan said.

The region can be an ideal area for organic farming also. But we need to stop jhum (shifting) cultivation by giving alternative jobs to the farmers and skilling youth farmers for the purpose, he told reporters. Ayyappan was here to attend the 22nd meeting of the North East Regional Committee of ICAR, which concluded yesterday. PTI
