NE Book Fair begins today

GUWAHATI, Dec 9 � The 12th North East Book Fair 2010, which will begin from tomorrow at the Chandmari Engineering ground here, promises a lot of interesting diversions for all age groups apart from the intellectual sessions to be conducted by noted writers and educationists of the State.

Organized by the All Assam Publishers� and Book Sellers� Association, the 11-day fair will be inaugurated by noted writer Mamoni Raisom Goswami at 3 pm.

This year 140 publishing and distribution houses from across the country are participating in the fair, which includes 28 participants from Kolkata, 13 participants from Delhi, 89 participants from Guwahati, one from Ludhiana, one from Siliguri and 8 from different corners of the State. On all the days excepting the holidays, the fair will open at 11 am and close at 8 pm.

For students entry to the fair is free, whereas for others the entry fee has been fixed at Rs 5.

Addressing media persons here on Thursday, president of the association Giripod Dev Choudhury informed that four seminars on relevant issues of the State will be held during the fair besides entertaining programmes like cultural functions and �Deuboria adda�.

�We are grateful to the people of the State for their participation in our fair and we hope this year too the people will encourage us,� said Choudhury adding that a felicitation programme has also been included. The organizers will felicitate eminent sportsperson Pulin Das, veteran journalist Tilak Hazarika, singer Sudakshina Sarma, artiste Prabhat Sarma and former VC Dr Kulendu Pathak.

On December 17, the exhibition ground will echo with the voices of poets who will read their works revolving on a wide range of themes right to highlighting the crisis of the modern times.

On the same day, the organizers have arranged a ankia bhaona titled �Rukmini Haran� from 6 pm.

A special programme for the children has been scheduled on December 19. This will feature various contests like drawing, recitation, extempore speech, and quiz.

Another programme for the fairer sex has been set apart on December 20.

Meanwhile, the Bhabani Print and Publications of Guwahati is arranging a book release programme on December 11 with 14 titles, stated a press release.
