NDFB(S) plan to disrupt polls

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, March 13 Militants belonging to the National Democratic Front of Boroland (Songbijit) have hatched a plan to create disturbances in the State, particularly in the areas on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra in the run-up to the elections, and police and security forces have been put on high alert to thwart such a move by the militants.

Highly placed security sources told The Assam Tribune that at least 150 members of the militant outfit are inside Assam and according to information available with the security agencies, the outfit is planning to target not only security personnel, but also a few political leaders whenever it gets an opportunity.

Sources said that the outfit received some setbacks as at least six senior leaders of the outfit were killed by police and security forces in recent times and the militants are getting desperate to hit back at the forces. The outfit has strong presence in Chirang, Udalguri and Sonitpur districts and the eastern command of the outfit based in Dhekiajuli area is considered to be the strongest wing.
