GUWAHATI, June 8 - Encouraged by its success in the recent parliamentary elections, the ruling BJP today exuded confidence about the NDA securing at least 90 seats in Assam in the 2021 Assembly polls.

Speaking at an event organised at the Sarusajai Sports Complex here by the State BJP to felicitate the partys candidates who won from Assam during the recent Lok Sabha polls and the Rajya Sabha elections, the saffron partys Assam unit president Ranjeet Kumar Dass said the leadership and image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, combined with the performance of the NDA regimes at the Centre and in the State as well as the hard work and joint efforts made by all the leaders and cadres of the outfit, were the main reasons for the BJPs good performance in the General Elections.

The way things are at present I can say that in the 2021 Assembly elections the tally of our NDA partners will not be less than 90 seats, whatever efforts the Congress and the AIUDF may make to the contrary, Dass said.

He said that NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma has already spoken of Mission 100, which talks about the BJP and its allies in Assam securing at least 100 seats in the 2021 Assembly elections. He called upon the BJP cadres to work hard so that the party can sustain the momentum gained by the victory in the Lok Sabha polls.

The kind of victory we secured this time is historic. The results were as per the estimate which we received in the feedback from our booth-level cadres after the polling was over but before the votes were counted. Even in Nagaon constituency where we lost, the BJP this time managed to secured two lakh votes more than what we had got in 2014. In addition, we were able to win unopposed from one of the two Rajya Sabha seats from Assam for which elections were announced. So, we have 10 new MPs of BJP from Assam, including nine in the Lok Sabha and one in the Rajya Sabha, Dass said.

He said the BJP has requested the State government to hold the elections to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation by September and the other urban local bodies of Assam by December. Our party cadres will have to work hard to repeat the success of the Lok Sabha polls in the various upcoming elections, including the GMC polls, the elections to the different municipal bodies and town committees and the Assembly polls of 2021, said the State BJP chief.

He also called upon all the newly-elected BJP MPs to take the party cadres into confidence and to ensure that the cadres are not ignored.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal requested all the newly-elected BJP MPs from Assam to raise their voices in Parliament for the interest of the State.

All our 10 new MPs must unitedly raise their voices in Parliament for Assam and for the people of the State. They should actively take up issues that affect the State, he said.

He said that Team Assam, represented jointly by the State government and the BJP cadres, has succeeded in working for the people of Assam during recent years.

Sonowal cautioned the partys newly-elected MPs against becoming arrogant. Power at times leads to arrogance. There are numerous examples in history where power has led to arrogance. We must never become arrogant. Rather, we must accept the power which the people have vested upon us as a blessing. We will never be able to make a mark without hard work and sacrifices, he said.

NEDA convenor Sarma, in his speech, claimed that BJPs best days in Assam are yet to come. He said the party cadres must work with passion and dedication to ensure that some time in the future the BJP on its own is able to secure over 100 seats in the Assam Legislative Assembly and win more than 10 out of the 14 Lok Sabha seats of the State. The best is yet to come, we have yet to reach the peak, he said.

At todays event all nine newly-elected LS MPs of the BJP from Assam and its newly-elected RS member Kamakhya Prasad Tasa were felicitated.
